High Winds and Power Outages in California

    By Douglas V. Gibbs

The winds whipped up in Southern California to the point that they blew harder than the highest setting the sensors could pick up. In other words, the winds blew harder in some places than 150 mph.

As I drove through various parts of the Los Angeles Basin, fallen trees and downed power lines littered the roadway. In some place high profile big rigs had been literally blown over onto their sides.

Intersections were bogged with traffic as vehicles worked to navigate beyond the dark traffic lights. Fire trucks roared by to secure live electrical wires.

And that was just this morning.

By this evening around 300,000 customers across Southern California had lost their power at one point during the day.

The Santa Ana winds can be incredible. . . and devastating.
